I went to Raja Ampat islands last week where I enjoyed birdwatching to see red paradise birds and snorkeling to see tropical fish. I also had a short tour in the forest of the island and then continued my trip to Sopen village. Watching Red Paradise Birds The next day I woke up early in the morning and left the village for Wararaf forest in the north east area of Waigeo island by boat. We entered a river and then continued our trip on foot to the birding ground of Red Bird of Paradise Paradisaea rubra. I was an amazing trip, I was able to see several male and female paradise birds in a high tree. To watch them I used a pair of Visionking 10x42 binoculars. The lek of the paradise birds was approximately one hour walk from the place where our boat landed and the path was flat with some small river crossings. Red Bird of Paradise Paradisaea rubra River entrance to Wararaf forest While watching for the Red Bird of Paradise, I could also hear the sounds of Sulphur Crested Cockatoo and Papuan Blyth's hornbill. We watched the birds for around hours and then returned to the boat again. It was a great experience. On the way back to Sopen, I saw some sea birds including several Radjah Shelduck that I saw at the beach. While waiting for lunch, I saw some Brahminy Kite Haliastur indus and hawks flying over the village. Visiting Fish Lagoon and Hiking in The Jungle of Waigeo After lunch, I continued my trip to Fish Lagoon that was similar to Piaynemo or Wayag islands. Small karst islets covered with green tropical trees form a protected waters for fish and coral reef to thrive. The landscape was so beautiful. I also had a hiking trip through the jungle near the lagoon where I saw more birds such as Eclectus Parrot, Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Western Black Capped Lory and Butcherbird. Local government was constructing a road that connects coastal villages. Most of the villagers in north-east region of Raja Ampat still use motorized boats to travel from one village to another. They do not have motorcycles or cars. So, when I was walking along the road I could only see trucks and bulldozer that belong to the road construction company. At the time there were no activities from the company. So, the forest was quiet. Only the sound of birds that I could hear. Fish Lagoon in Raja Ampat Snorkeling Experience Raja Ampat archipelago was one of the best marine environment with the highest marine bio-diversity in the world. I enjoyed snorkeling in several coral reef areas of the islands. White sandy beach with colorful coral reef and tropical fish were the typical scenery of Raja Ampat. I enjoyed snorkeling at Isanak beach, and DPL reef and Mamiaef island. They were so beautiful, fantastic! After spending one night walking at a small wooden house near a beach, I left Raja Ampat for Sorong city again. White Sandy Beach in Raja Ampat The eastern region of Raja Ampat has not been developed into a tourist destination. So, we would not see beach hotels or guesthouses in the villages where we visit. Visitors who are interested in visiting the region could stay in the villagers houses. East Raja Ampat Tour Package As a tour guide, I offer a tour package for visitors who are interested in swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, taking island tours in Fish Lagoon as well as hiking and birdwatching in tropical jungle. In other words, we will explore the coral reef and rainforest of Raja Ampat to see its wildlife. Because there is no regular ferry service, we need to go there by motorized wooden boat. Snorkeling the Reefs of Misool, Raja Ampat! Misool is the second largest island in the Raja Ampat archipelago, and easily possesses some of the most stunning tropical scenery, both above and below the waterline, in the world. Hundreds of rugged, jungle-clad limestone islands string from the southeastern region of Misool, remnants of an ancient reef that has since been uplifted, to create a network of shallow bays, intimate island passes, and secluded lagoons. X As part of the Raja Ampat Bird’s Head Seascape, the turquoise-blue waters around Misool teem with life. Nearly 500 species of corals and over 1500 species of tropical marine fishes can be found in Misool and multiple habitats around each of the picturesque island groups promote the growth of shallow, vibrant, and diverse coral reef communities. X Our itinerary takes us to the best reefs and scenery that we have found in our nearly 20 years of combined experience snorkeling in the Raja Ampat. Whether we float idyllically above colorful coral gardens or along steep island drop-offs, each day our snorkeling adventures will be set amongst the magnificent backdrop of limestone islands that makes Misool such a special destination to snorkel. X ITINERARY Our snorkeling tour begins and ends in Jakarta, Indonesia. One round trip, internal flight Jakarta-Sorong-Jakarta. Upon our arrival in Sorong, we will board our boat and cruise towards Misool. Please note that although we visit many of the islands and island groups in the sample itinerary below, each of our departures is unique and that weather, tides, and opportunities to explore all play a role in the decisions about our daily schedule as well as the overall itinerary. Day 1 Jakarta / FM7 Hotel Jakarta Meals provided D Meet in Jakarta, Indonesia at our group hotel, the Bandara International, for the tour orientation and welcome dinner. As is often the case with our internal flight, we will depart for Sorong in the late evening, thus our overnight’ will be in transit to Sorong. Overnight FM7 Hotel, Jakarta. Day 2 Sorong / Gaia Love Meals provided B,L,D Fly to Sorong and transfer to our live-aboard boat, the Gaia Love. While we do not plan to have the chance to snorkel today, if time and weather permits, we will give it our best. Overnight Gaia Love Day 3 – 5 Pelee / Wayil / Olobie groups Meals provided B,L,D The rugged limestone island groups to the southwest offer us the chance for big wall snorkeling as the reefs around many of these islands plunge hundreds of feet just a few fin kicks from shore. Colorful sea fans and soft corals adorn the walls while lush, healthy hard coral gardens pack the shallows. In the Olbie groups, snorkeling through huge schools of silversides that hide in the afternoon shade can be a surreal and thrilling experience! Overnight Gaia Love Day 6 Boo / Yilliet Meals provided B,L,D Yilliet and Boo give us the chance for some drift snorkeling where we get to see large schools of snapper, barracuda, and travally as well as schooling planktivores such as fusiliers and pyramid butterflyfishes. Turtles and sharks are common and the healthy reef near shore is a virtual aquarium of tropical marine fishes. Overnight Gaia Love Day 7 – 10 Wagmab / Lenkafal Meals provided B,L,D The northernmost string of limestone islands create network of quiet bay and narrow island passes that make perfect settings for our snorkeling activities. We’ll spend one day snorkeling a narrow channel where on one side we find a colorful wall of soft corals, tunicates, and variety of nudibranchs, and hard coral garden with mangroves on the other side. This area also boasts extensive shallow reefs, a marine lake, incredible fringing reefs systems around remote islets and the chance to explore a huge cave system by dinghy. Overnight Gaia Love Day 11 Balbulol Meals provided B,L,D Our last day couldn’t be spent in a more scenic area. As an equatorial island archipelago, weather year round is hot and humid, with nearly daily rain showers occurring in the early morning or late afternoon. Daytime temperatures hover around 86º F 30º C and do not fall much at night. Water temperatures average around 82º F 28º C, though cooler temperatures may occur if persistent rains cause a thin layer of cool freshwater on the surface. Currents around Misool are generally light but may be strong at specific sites. While we plan our snorkel session around the slack tides, we also have several sites where having water movement is an advantage. These drift snorkels allow us to cover large tracks of reef without having to swim too hard. Our snorkel sessions are 100% boat supported and two dinghies will be there at all times to assist anyone for whatever reason. Most of the islands are steep and rugged with small pocket beaches. While we won’t have many opportunities to walk on the islands, there may be chances for a beach walk or two. We will have several scenic dinghy tours scheduled during our time in Misool. Please read more about our daily schedule here. WHAT TO BRING The following list is a suggestion of things to bring and applies to almost all of our trips specific items on a particular departure will be noted on the departure information. -A good fitting mask, snorkel, and set of fins. If your equipment is brand new, please try it out in the pool. Determining the fit and function of your equipment in the pool includes doing several laps with all of your equipment on. Doing several snorkel dives is also very beneficial. It is also important to clean your new equipment, especially your mask. Cleaning procedures for your mask include light scrubbing with toothpaste or dishwasher soap to remove the light layer of silicon that is used to preserve the mask during shipping and storage. All areas of the mask, both inside and out, need to be addressed. Doing this greatly reduces the chances of having your mask fog. Not doing this, even when using mask de-fogger, usually results in a fogged mask. -A wetsuit, rash guard, diveskin, or any type of clothing that can be used for thermal and/or protection form the sun. We suggest bringing a full 3mm wetsuit and some type of core insulation like a vest or shirt made of 1 – 2 mm neoprene Lavacore or Sharkskin shirts or vests. These items will not only provide thermal protection but protection from the sun as well. For those who feel that a 3mm suit may be too warm, please consider a full body skin or rash guard to ensure protection from the strong sun. With regards to thermal protection, remember the saying it is better to have and not need, than to need and not have. One that note… -Head protection in the form of a wetsuit hood, a cap, or even a bandana. Anything that can keep the sun off of your head is extremely important. It is the most exposed part of our bodies when we are floating on the surface. -Biodegradable sunscreen lotion. Okay, this is a tricky suggestion. Even many biodegradable sunscreen lotions have been shown to harm and even kill tiny larvae baby marine life ranging from fish to all types of invertebrates especially coral. It is fine to wear on land, but we highly discourage the use of sunscreen lotions in the water. Having a full wetsuit or skin will do the job of protection from the sun much better than lotions and the suits also help with thermal protection. It is truly a win-win for everyone and the marine environment. -Casual, lightweight, tropical clothing -Sunglasses and a spare in case you lose your main pair -Comfortable footwear such as active sandals Teva, Keen, Merrell, etc. -Hats. We cannot stress the importance of a hat in the tropics! -All of our boats provide items like shampoo, soap, towels, etc. We bring this up because these items represent added weight and if they leak, less-than-fun times during the unpacking stage of the trip. Other items that may be considered -Lightweight rainwear to protect from the occasional afternoon shower -Binoculars DEPARTURES Mar 05 – Feb 17, 2024 ←Click to request a booking Accommodations Gaia Love Guides TBD Length 13 days Prices and Payment schedule $8600 USD per person, double occupancy $11,600 USD per person, single occupancy Reservation deposit $500 USD September 5, 2023 $4600 USD / $6600 USD single occ. One of the main coral reefs at Raja Ampat, an Indonesian island chain home to perhaps the world’s richest marine biodiversity, was severely damaged last week when a Bahamian-flagged cruise ship smashed into it at low tide, according to an official 90-meter Caledonian Sky, owned by tour operator Noble Caledonia, ran aground in an uncharted shoal in West Papua province after completing a bird-watching trip on Waigeo Island on 4 British-owned company described the incident as “unfortunate” and said it was “cooperating fully with the relevant authorities”. Damage to the vessel was minimal and it has already set sail after being questioned by official evaluation team found that the ship had been caught in low tide despite being equipped with GPS and radar instruments, according to team member Ricardo Tapilatu, head of the Research Center for Pacific Marine Resources at the University of Papua.“A tugboat from Sorong city was deployed to help refloat the cruise ship, which is something that shouldn’t have happened because it damaged the reef even worse,” Tapilatu said. “They should’ve waited for high tide” to refloat the 4,290-tonne Caledonian Sky, which was carrying 102 passengers and 79 crew on a 16-night journey from Papua New Guinea to the Philippines, damaged approximately 1,600 square meters of coral at a diving site known as Crossover incident resulted in the destruction of the ecosystem’s structural habitat and the reduction or loss of diversity of eight coral genera, including acropora, porites, montipora and stylophora.“This is what we found during our investigation into the site,” Tapilatu said. “We are currently finishing the report and will submit our recommendations to the district office next week.”The Caledonian Sky after it ran aground at Raja Ampat. Photograph Courtesy Stay Raja AmpatLocal homestay operator Stay Raja Ampat posted on Facebook “How can this happen? Was a 12-year-old at the wheel? Anchor damage from ships like these is bad enough, but actually grounding a ship on a reef takes it to a whole new level.”Due to Raja Ampat’s special biodiversity and its status as one of the world’s most popular dive sites, as well as the fact that the damage occurred in a national park, the evaluation team will recommend the company pay compensation of $800-$1,200 £650-£985 per square meter, for a total of $ according to Tapilatu. The standard rate is $200-$400 per square meter.“If the ship’s owner disagrees with the claim, then typically the government will take it to court,” Tapilatu said. If the company and government can reach an agreement, it will likely take a year or two for the district administration to receive the said the money would be used to revive the reef, a process he estimated could take a decade; to set more mooring buoys across the area to prevent ships from sailing into shallow zones; and to map out sailing corals just outside the impact zone left compared with those destroyed in the impact. Photograph Courtesy Stephanie Venables/Marine Megafauna Foundation/Mongabay“The government has had talks about compensation with the ship company, and I’m optimistic that this won’t go to court. Unfortunately, there will not be any moves for coral revival until we get the money.”Andi Rusandi, director for conservation and marine biodiversity at the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, said local conservation and revival efforts were within the local government’s authority, but he said he would follow the its statement, Noble Caledonia said it was “firmly committed to protection of the environment, which is why it is imperative that the reasons for it are fully investigated, understood and any lessons learned incorporated in operating procedures.” Raja Ampat Snorkeling Tour, Nov, 2017 Trip Report Raja Ampat 2017 trip report. Another superlative CTA excursion through the very heart of the Coral Triangle! We are just back from our latest journey through the islands of Raja Ampat and we’re still bathing in the afterglow of the experience. Our trip began with wonderful weather and though we had a bit of rain here and there during the course of the route that never took away from the area’s magnificent underwater backdrops. Raja Ampat covers a massive area with hundreds of islands so it could never be adequately covered during just one snorkeling trip. Thus, we decided to focus on the northern islands above Sorong and charted a unique route that took us through the area’s wide-ranging marine habitats. Table corals Wayag Islands Every one of CTA’s trips is an exclusively-crafted itinerary, specific to the locale, the weather, the marine life and the underwater conditions. From Sorong we headed into the blue waters along northern Batanta then sailed along western Waigeo and across the equator to the spectacular limestone islands of Wayag. Working our way back down towards the famed and fishy waters of the Dampier Strait we explored off-the-beaten-path reefs that offered up some unbelievable and unforgettable gems. A few of the numerous highlights from this adventure include watching an incredibly rare Hairy octopus’ escapades, finding a trio of minute Crinoid cuttlefish fight for the right to mate with a female, and watching the shy behaviors of one of the most extraordinary reef fish in these waters, a Picturesque dragonet. As always we were able to find a plethora of vibrant nudibranchs and other bizarrely-colored invertebrates but we also had some time to watch the behaviors of big fish, such as bumphead parrotfish feeding, tasseled wobbeong sharks camouflaging themselves on the seafloor, and huge resident manta rays visiting their cleaning stations. Colorful coral garden It is not only the astonishing wildlife and delightful scenery we consistently get to observe, but the people who come with CTA who make our trips ones to remember. Our unfailingly passionate and inquisitive group of avid snorkelers create the best atmosphere one can imagine for exploring the shallow marine habitats of the Coral Triangle.
